What is a calzone?
Aside from being delicious, calzones have been a staple style of cuisine across various areas in Southern Italy. As you probably know, a calzone consists of bread dough folded into a full pizza. Essentially, it’s a pizza but inside out. So, you’ll have a savory bread crust all the way around. Then, it’s traditionally filled with various cheeses like mozzarella or ricotta, salami, or ham.
History 101
Back in the 1700s, in Naples, Italy, calzones were a classic street food offered all around the city. Due to the convenient shape and style of food, calzones were always meant to be eaten on the go. The crispy crust and gooey cheese became a popular hit and were easy to make! Although, unlike our dinner portions today, the traditional calzone was significantly smaller, as they were meant to be portable.
