Looking for “pizza near me?” Come on down to Jasmine’s Roast Beef! One of the biggest debates in the culinary world (especially in the pizza business) doesn’t come as a shock to many. It seems that everyone who is a fan of pizza has an opinion set in stone somewhere along the lines of the battlefield. But does pineapple really belong on pizza? Our team at Jasmine’s Roast Beef is here to find out.
The Making of Pineapple Pizza
Pineapple pizza, or Hawaiian pizza, was actually created in Canada, by a Greek man. In the 1960s, Sam Panopoulos was throwing together ingredients and putting them on pizzas to test them out. This was until he did the unthinkable for many and placed pineapple slices onto the pizzas. “We just wanted to put it on, just for the fun of it,” Panopoulos said to BBC in a 2017 interview.
The Science Behind Pineapple on Pizza
As an article made by Spoon University states, there is a solid scientific backing that explains why pineapple works so well on pizza. Our taste buds are broken down into five key factors; sweet, bitter, salty, savory, and sour. We naturally crave things like sugar because it provides a source of energy to complete our daily tasks. Much of our critical sources of sugar come from fruit like apples, oranges, and pineapples. Furthermore, our tastebuds can taste multiple layers of food at a time. This is more commonly found with sweet and salty combinations of foods like pretzels and chocolate, PB&J, and yes, even pineapple pizza.
The War on Pineapple
While many pizza fans love the idea of pineapple on pizza, there are, of course, many others who despise it altogether. In fact, one of the most famous anti-pineapple activists is famed British chef Gordan Ramsey. In 2018, a fan of Gordan Ramsay stated that she thought pineapple pizza was innovative. But Ramsay didn’t have any of it, later replying, “Pineapple does not go on top of pizza…..” The statement even went so far that the CISA (a federal agency dedicated to cybersecurity created a document called “The War on Pineapple.”
