The weather is getting colder, and we’re starting to seek out some comfort meals to keep us warm this season. Luckily for you, we have plenty of comfort meals to offer when you need food in Seabrook, including calzones! Today, we’re here to celebrate National Calzone Day, Which just passed on November 1st!

History of the Calzone

The delicious creation of the calzone originated in Naples, Italy, in the 1700s. It was initially made to be eaten on the go in the streets of Naples. Calzones were made at this time by folding an uncooked pizza in half and baking it. They were also typically smaller than the calzones we think of today. This is because it made it easier for people to walk around with it in hand without needing any utensils. Fun fact: calzone also translates to “trousers” in Italian, making it the perfect meal to eat while walking around!

What’s in a Calzone?

The components of a calzone can change depending on one’s preference, and we think that’s what makes them so great! However, the first calzones were primarily made of pizza dough and various types of meat, cheeses, sauces, and vegetables stuffed inside. Today, we put just about anything we prefer in them. The possibilities and combinations are endless, from ingredients like spinach, olives, mushrooms, peppers, and onions!

Ever since calzones made their way to the US, many people have used a fork and a knife to eat them. This is because they’re made large enough for two people to eat! But go ahead and eat one for yourself, we won’t judge! A calzone is typically now enjoyed with dipping sauces and topped with olive oil, garlic, and herbs for extra flavor.

Calzones at Jasmine’s

Believe it or not, we don’t serve just roast beef and seafood, we also make pizza and calzones too! We have small, medium, and large calzone sizes to order. We recommend trying one of our favorite calzones with chicken, broccoli, onion, and white sauce. But if white sauce isn’t quite your style, you’ll love our chicken parmesan calzone with ricotta cheese and marinara sauce.
